City to begin picking up green compost bins next week

Citywide clean-up hours rescheduled for May 4 and 5

HURON — The city solid waste department will resume collection of the green compost containers next Monday.
Commissioner Mark Robish announced at Monday’s meeting that the city is also working to hopefully reopen the compost site later this week.
Residents are reminded that the green containers will be picked up on the same day as their normal garbage collection day.
Also, people with sump pumps are asked to direct their hoses to the street and gutter rather than to the sanitary system.
Meanwhile, due to last weekend’s blizzard which cut short the citywide clean-up hours on Friday and canceled them altogether on Saturday, it has been rescheduled for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 4 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. Residents are to bring their May utility bills with them when they haul items to the rubble site.
Acceptable items are household garbage, tires, metal, Freon units, appliances, trees, wood, electronics, car batteries, mattresses, furniture, carpet and construction materials. Hazardous materials will not be accepted.

Meanwhile, a variance request to allow James Hines to construct an addition to an attached garage that will be 5-foot 7-inches from the east property line where code requires a seven-foot side yard setback has been approved by the City Commission.
The project address is 180 Seventh St. N.E.
Hines wants to build a 24-by-42-foot addition to the existing attached garage. The current garage sits crooked on the lot.
The addition will be 6-foot 6-inches away from the east property line at the north end and 5-foot 7-inches from the east property line at the south end.
Commissioners also:
• Set May 7 as the public hearing date for a special event on-sale alcoholic beverage license filed by the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau for the Canaries baseball game on May 13 at Memorial Baseball Park.
• Approved requests for alcoholic beverage consumption in a public area filed by Diane Clayton for a wedding reception on May 19 at the Campus Center and Chelsea Hildebrandt for a baby shower on July 7 at Prospect Park Glide and Slide Shelter.
• Accepted the voluntary resignation of police officer Brandon Hurd.
• Approved a $120,884 progress payment to Kyburz Carlson Construction of Aberdeen for the public works building.
• Authorized the police department to apply for grant funding for bulletproof vests from the Department of Justice.
Capt. Dan Kight, in his request, said the cost of each vest ranges from $600 to $800. The total number of vests varies, depending on the number needed for new hires and replacement of expiring vests. He said he anticipates the department will purchase about 13 vests in 2019. Grant funds typically cover 40 to 50 percent of the cost.
