Huron, JVC runners compete in Clyde Cotton Invitational

HURON — Huron senior Sami Shoultz shaved 20 seconds off her time from a year ago to finish 16th in the girls’ varsity race during the Clyde Cotton Invitational on Saturday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.
Shoultz had a time of 20:20.14 in leading the Tigers on their home course.
“Sami ran a smart race in the varsity division,” Huron coach Angie Thomas said.
Ellie Abraham of Brookings won the girls’ varsity race with a time of 18:58.94, while Melanie Jacobs of Aberdeen Central was second at 19:17.66.
Madelynn Brantner was the leading runner for James Valley Christian with a time of 21:18.78 to finish 44th, while teammate Abby Hasart was 49th at 21:27.54.
Braylee Thomas was 76th for Huron at 22:27.56, while AbbyKate Hamilton and Kyra Thielbar finished at 24:22.35 and 5:36.81, respectively.
Brandon Valley earned the top spot in the varsity girls’ team race with 85 points, while Brookings was second at 98. Rounding out the top five were Rapid City Central at 101, Custer at 114 and Aberdeen Central at 118.
With four runners finishing in the top 18, Sioux Falls Washington claimed the varsity boys’ title. The Warriors finished with 55 points to edge Aberdeen Central by seven points for the top spot.
Custer was third at 90, followed by Sioux Falls Christian at 113 and Sioux Falls O’Gorman at 119.
James Valley Christian, which had four of its five runners in the top half of the 95-runner field, was eighth with 168.
Aaron Ryan won the boys’ varsity race in 16:04.25, while Britton Elkin of Brandon Valley was second at 16:34.21.
Colton Schweigert was the top runner for James Valley Christian, finishing 23rd at 17:54.23. Daniel Ayoroa was 28th for the Vikings at 18:07.51, while Braden Held was 32nd at 18:15.62 and Darrian Hood was 41st at 18:32.57.
Carlos Yanes was 49th for Huron at 18:49.99, while teammate Frank Hines was 69th at 19:28.04.
“His time was very good for our course,” Thomas said of Yanes’ effort.
Jevin Goertz turned in a time of 21:06.89 for JVC.
Huron’s Tori Buffington crossed the line second in the girls’ junior varsity race at 17:19.40.
“She ran a smart race and had quite a bit left at the end,” Thomas said of Buffington.
Will Radke led the Tigers in the JV boys’ race, finishing 12th at 15:36.09.
Huron will be back in action Thursday at the Brookings Invitational.
