Huron Pee Wee A captures consolation title at state tourney

BROOKINGS — The Huron Pee Wee A hockey team used a pair of upsets to claim the consolation champions during the Pee Wee A State Tournament, which concluded Sunday in Brookings.
After closing the regular season with a 10-3 run, the seventh-seeded All-Stars opening the tournament with a 12-1 setback against second-seeded Brookings, which would go on to win the state title.
Huron would meet sixth-seeded Mitchell, a team it had lost to twice during the regular season, in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.
Grady Bott tallied a hat trick in the opening period to help the All-Stars to a 3-2 advantage, but late goal by Mitchell forced overtime.

With 5:30 remaining in overtime, Ethan Busch buried the game-winning goal on a pass from Bott to give Huron a 6-5 win and a spot in the consolation title game.
Huron then cruised to a 9-3 victory against eighth-seeded Sioux Falls to claim the consolation championship on Sunday.
“This group of kids has an incredible drive and extreme amount of grit,  I had several coaches from other towns tell me they didn’t really want to play us, because we never give up and play so hard. I knew after we beat Mitchell there wouldn’t be much Sioux Falls could do to keep us down,” said Huron coach Tom Glanzer.
Busch finished the state tournament eight goals and three assists for the All-Stars, who ended the season at 15-12. Bott had seven goals and an assist, while Haiden McCloud had a goal and three assits. Brecken Glanzer recorded a pair of assists, while Landyn Maas and Jack Mitchell each had an assist.
