HURON — Joycelyn “Kay” Boomsma, 79, of Huron, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2018, at Huron Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
Her funeral service will be 2 p.m., Monday, March 19, at First United Methodist Church in Huron with interment in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, or one hour prior to the service at the church.
Joycelyn “Kay” Bauman, the only child born to Glen and Opal (McNichols) Bauman, was born August 8, 1938, in Huron. As a young girl, Kay was involved with Jobs Daughters, the Brownies and the Girls Scouts. She attended both Nicolett and Marshall High Schools in Minn. and Huron High School, graduating in 1956. Kay married Joel Wing in 1953, in Huron; to this marriage two children were born; Joel and Lori.
Kay married Jacob Boomsma on April 14, 1961, in Pipestone, Minn. The couple made their home and grew their family on the family farm near Hitchcock. Kay held many jobs including Red Star Cleaners at the age of 11, babysitting, Penney’s during high school, St. John’s Regional Medical Center and Northwestern Bank, but her favorite and most important job was that of being a mother and farmwife.
Kay did not miss an event her children were in whether it was sports or music. Growing up Kay belonged to Grace Episcopal Church and Broadland United Methodist Church where she has been a member since 1962. Kay taught Sunday school and was the Church Financial Secretary.
Kay will always be remembered by her family as a kind, gracious host, who always had coffee and treats ready for family and friends.
Grateful for having shared in Kay’s life are her children, Joel Wing of Huron, Lori (Tellus) Waddell of Marvin, Steve (LeAnn) Boomsma of Hitchcock, Kathy (Rich) Skorheim of Huron, Kenny (Patti) Boomsma of Hitchcock, and Mark (Sheri) Boomsma of Clark; stepson, Dennis (Connie) Boomsma of Box Elder; 30 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Liz Hiles, and Sally Boomsma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob, December 3, 2015; her parents; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; brothers and sisters-in-law, Agnes and Lloyd Tevedal, Reva and Ray Stengle, Dick Boomsma, and Carol and Ed Brenner.
