To the Editor:
Schools and communities across the country celebrate April as National School Library Month, a time to remind the public about the contributions schools, libraries, librarians, and library workers make to their communities every day.
Dav Pilkey, New York Times bestselling author of the “Captain Underpants” and “Dog Man” series, will serve as the national spokesperson for the 2019 celebration of School Library Month. “Growing up with learning challenges in school after being diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, I have been fortunate to have had the encouragement and support of my parents who helped me to associate reading with fun,” said Pilkey. He added that he read lots of books and magazines that made him laugh out loud, leading him to discover many other books in different genres. Reading without judgment was a turning point and made him a lifelong reader.
“Today’s school libraries provide a place not just for reading, but for a wide range of opportunities,” said Linda Pietz, Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment Director for the Huron School District.
