HURON — The Huron boys’ and girls’ track teams will have six athletes competing in individual events, along with realy teams during the Class AA State Meet today and Saturday.
Competition will begin at 10 a.m. Today at Woodle Field in Sturgis, with Saturday’s competition scheduled for 9 a.m. at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.
“We want to give our best effort and peak at the right time,” Huron coach Tom Baszler said of his team’s focus heading into the season-ending event.
Senior Travis Kleinsasser holds the best shot of earning a state title for the Tigers. He shares the second-seeded height of 14 feet, 9 inches heading into the state meet.
“He is looking to end up at the top of the podium,” Baszler said of Kleinsaser. “Experience will be a key for him.
Junior Matt Katz has also qualified to compete in the boys’ pole vault for the Tigers. He is seeded 12th at 13-0.
Also competing individually for the Huron boys will be senior Mason Small and junior Teegan Evers.

Small is seeded No. 18 in the triple jump at 41-0.5, while Evers is seeded No. 24 in the high jump at 5-10.
Competing in relay events for the Tigers will be seniors Alex Hill and Isaac Carr; juniors Xavier Erickson and Josiah Savery; and freshmen Ryan Janes, Tyson Lien, Jaren Schley and Derick Siemonsma.
“We will be competitive in the relays,” Baszler said.
Competing individually for the Huron girls will be senior Reagan Rozell in the pole vault and seventh-grader Brynn Gose in the 100-meter dash.
Rozell has a seeding mark of 9-6 entering the final event of her high school career.
“Reagan Rozell will give it her best effort in the pole vault,” Baszler said. “She is a motivated senior athlete with nothing to lose.”
Gose is seeded No. 22 entering her first state meet.
“Brynn Gose has come out of nowehere to make it in the 100,” Baszler said. “That’s pretty impressive for a seventh grader.”
Helping the Tigers in the girls’ relays will be seniors Kayla Schimke and Gracie Schoenfelder; juniors Sami Shoultz and Braylee Thomas; freshmen Lexy Gilbert and Tenley Buddenhagen; and seventh-grader Heaven Gainey.
“I think we really have a chance to place in the girls’ medley relay,” Baszler said. “They have had a good year.”
Sioux Falls Lincoln is the defending Class AA champions in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.
