Webster, Roncalli win 1A cross country titles; Cyclone boys qualify as team

WEBSTER — The Webster Area Bearcats edged the Milbank Bulldogs by a scant two points to win the boys’ title at the Region 1A Cross Country Meet Thursday, on their home Webster Golf Course.
Aberdeen Roncalli earned the title in the girls’ race with 23 points and Milbank again finished second, with 37 points and Deuel finished third with 49. Clark-Willow Lake finished sixth in the girls’ race.
Webster Area ended with 31 points in the meet, while Milbank finished with 33. Clark-Willow Lake finished third with 37 points and earning a spot in next week’s Class “A” State Cross Country meet in the process.
Individually, Milbank’s Nick Batchelor won the boys’ race by nearly two minutes over Isaac Smith of Groton Area. Webster Area’s Drew Reetz was third. Clark-Willow Lake runners Brady Jordan, Charlie Spieker and Schuyler McElhone finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively for the Cyclones. Redfield’s Riley Whitley earned a spot in the state meet by finishing 11th in the region.
Kenzie Hamann of Deuel led the girls’ runners across the finish line for the individual title. Paige Schmidt of Roncalli finished second and Deuel’s Jaycee Hourigan finished third.
Danielle Batchelor of Clark-Willow Lake finished 13th and will run in the girls’ state meet, while Redfield’s Kyra Utecht finished one spot out of automatically qualifying.
