City updates on Market Street closure

Posted

HURON — A question on the mind of many in the city of Huron was addressed Monday evening during public forum at the Huron City Commission meeting. Commissioner Shawn Harvey explained the time frame for the current Market Street closure.

“The city has been coordinating with Northwestern regarding the Market Street closure,” Harvey explained. “Northwestern is boring new gas lines under the street and under the railroad in preparation for the reconstruction of Dakota Avenue next summer.”

Harvey explained that the installation of the new lines has not gone as planned, and the closure of Market Street on both sides of Dakota Avenue will continue until Dec. 15, and will then open with limited access.

Alternative routes will need to be utilized until the work is completed.

Assistant city engineer Dennis Bennett presented a payment request from First Rate Excavate, Inc. for work done on the parking ramp removal and new parking lot construction. The payment was for $108,157.15 and was approved.

The commission met in a work session to discuss the potential of alcohol licensing at city-owned facilities, with Broadland Creek Golf Course the primary city facility that would qualify through new legislation passed in the 2023 session. A resolution will be drawn up and presented to the commission for review and public comment.

Commissioners also:
• Approved a special event on-sale alcoholic beverage license for Top Floor Events for a Chamber Mixer on Dec. 12 at Farmers & Merchants Bank, 333 Dakota Ave. S.
• Approved a special event on-sale alcoholic beverage license for Thunderbird Liquor for a Center for Independence event on Dec. 1 at 561 21st St. SE.

City offices will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.

The solid waste department will be closed Thursday, Friday and Saturday due to Thanksgiving. Thursday and Friday garbage/recycling pickups will be done on Wednesday. Right now there is no further yard waste pickup scheduled this year.

The commission then adjourned into executive session regarding a personnel matter to close the meeting.
