Bulldogs one step closer to fifth straight State B basketball appearance

HURON — The three-time defending Class B champion De Smet Bulldogs took another step at a repeat title Friday night, running away from the Deubrook Area Dolphins 64-33 in a Region 2B matchup at Huron Arena, and advancing to next Tuesday’s SoDak 16 round.
De Smet exploded out of the blocks, taking a 23-10 lead after the first quarter, and outscored the Dolphins 37-19 in the second half to improve to 19-3 on the season.
Tom Aughenbaugh scored 15 points and Kadyn Fast added 14 to lead a balanced Bulldog scoring effort, that saw three other players score at lead eight points. Trace Van Regenmorter had eight rebounds to lead De Smet.
Colton Trooien scored 13 points to lead Deubrook Area, which ends the season with a record of 11-11. Jacob Jorenby added 12 for the Dolphins.
De Smet will take on Timber Lake in the SoDak 16 round of play on Tuesday, with the site to be determined.
