To the Editor:

The week of April 21 thru 27 is known as National Volunteer Week. It is a week when we recognize and appreciate the many wonderful people who willingly give of their time and talent to various organizations.

The Huron Regional Medical Center Auxiliary is one of those agencies that benefits from the contributions of its 35 volunteer members. These kind and cheerful individuals give approximately four hours a week to serve the hospital and patients in any way possible.

At the Main Desk of the new hospital, volunteers manage the gift shop, help patients and caregivers find their destination, answer questions, deliver flowers and newspapers, plus they fill any other needs that need to be met.

At the Central Tower front desk, volunteers perform many of the same activities, minus the newspapers. In the Radiology/Lab waiting room, they offer coffee and conversation to patients waiting for various procedures.

The need for more volunteers is staggering.

The Same Day Surgery lounge has not been staffed since the COVID pandemic. Physicians Clinic and Dialysis Center have expressed an interest in using volunteer help. Those needs are not met due to a lack of volunteers.

Volunteers may sign up for a “regular” position where they come in for the same morning or afternoon shift, one day a week. The “subs” are on call to fill in where needed when the regulars can’t fulfill their obligation. Training is provided.

The $10 annual dues are combined with the revenue from both gift shops to provide scholarships for students in a medical related field.

If anyone is interested in more information, please visit either main desk and ask for an application. Or call Membership Chairperson Bonnie Sheridan at 605-354-1233. It is sure to be the best decision you will make for yourself.
