Tigers look to end strong at 2022 Class AA State Meet

Posted

HURON — Huron will be sending 15 boys and 15 girls to compete in the Class AA State Track Meet, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

This year’s event will be the first with a 3-day format, with each of the three classes competing exclusively at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. Previously, Class AA and A would open the state meet at other sites and join Class B for the final day of competition at Howard Wood Field.

The move to a single site is a good one, according to Huron head coach Angie Thomas.

“I like that we are all running at Howard Wood,” she said. “I think the State Meet seems more like a State event when we can perform on the big stage each day.”

Events will begin at 12:30 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Nearly all of the participants for the Tigers had their best performance of the season last week during the Mark Wendelgass Relays at Tiger Stadium. Thomas is hoping her team can carry that momentum into the season-ending meet.

“Basically, most of the athletes ended their regular season with a personal record, so that is very positive as they head to the state eet,” Thomas said. “We want to continue improving on times, distances and heights.”

Sophomore Hamtyn Heinz is seeded seventh in the girls’ javelin for Huron entering the state meet with a throw of 110-feet, while freshman Zaniyah Lanier has the 11th best time of 12.79 in the 100-meter dash for the Tigers.

Lanier is also a member of Huron’s 400 and 800 relay teams. Joining her in the 400 are junior Brynn Gose, freshman Adison Moore and junior Heavan Gainey. Moore, Gainey and senior Emily Dale join Lanier on the 800 relay team.

“Our relay teams have been running well all year,” Thomas said.

Dale will also compete in the long jump, while Gainey will be in the 100 prelims, Lanier will also run in the 200; Atara Richmond will compete In the high jump, freshman Cameron Ruth will be in the pole vault; and sophomore Makenzie Siemonsma will compete in the 100 hurdles.

Also competing in relays for the Tigers will be eighth-grader Chloe Carr, sophomore Tatum Peterson, senior Reese Rozell, freshman Hannah Schoenfelder and eighth-grader Josie Vlieger.

Junior Quinson Luellman is ranked 11th for Huron in the boys’ 100 dash at 11.06 seconds, while junior Dylan Lichty is 12th in the pole vault at 12-3.

Another strong competitor for the Tigers is senior Isaiah Decker, who recorded a 150-foot throw in the javelin to close the regular season.

“if he can match that or improve on it, he has a good chance of placing,” Thomas said of Decker, who will also compete in the shot put and discus events.

Others competing in individual events for the Huron boys’ will be junior Cheech Harman (3,200 run); freshman Kolby Hofer (javelin); senior Max Kranzler (400); sophomore Bryan Ramirez (discus) and junior Quenton Walls (triple jump).

Competing in relays for the Tigers will be senior Eh Taw Boe, freshman Moses Gross, senior Ethan Hunter, freshman TJ Lien, junior Cody Marshall, junior Cole Ochsner and senior Will Radke.
