To the Editor:
Whether its the State, County or Township, Ive always believed the balance of power should go to the citizens thereof. Leaders are elected not to rule, but to lead us in the attainment of our goals.
In S.D., if theres a question as to what most people want, we have methods to bring it to a vote. One of the foundations of our government, majority rule, has worked well and I believe in the concept of everyone having one vote. When deciding on an issue, we should pay a little more attention and listen to those directly affected. Its easy to say wind energy is good, but you should spend time near a windmill before you force someone else to.
The DOC is quoted saying one main reason for choosing this site for the new prison is theres no community there. Thats astounding news to those of us who live here. The Beaver Creek Community was founded before the present prison was built, and is still alive and well.
Before this issue, everyone 2 miles around the site know each other, we know everyones vehicles and we look out for each other. Not many square blocks in a city can say the same. We live further apart because we enjoy our privacy and peace. Thats why we came here. This intrusion would put an end to that. The community would be destroyed.
We ask the state look at alternatives, trade this property for a more suitable site, which they have a long history of doing, where infrastructures available and commercial developments desirable, leaving our community zoned residential and agricultural.
I hope everyone has the opportunity to pursue their dream, but have a care for the dreams of those around you, and be watchful of those who dont care at all.
