James Jesser of Iroquois has the perfect stocking stuffer for anyone who loves to read. He has written two Christmas stories, The Inheritance and Three Wisemen and a Cranky Angel, which have been printed into one book titled, Festive Tales.
Originally, The Inheritance was written for the Kingsbury Journal, but it was too long to be run in the paper.
Jesser says several of the characters of the story are based on people he has worked with.
Three Wisemen and a Cranky Angel came about as a passing thought while Jesser attended the funeral of a friend two years ago.
The angel character, Gordon, is based on Jessers dad. Gordon is involved with assisting three men.
Their lives become intertwined by the end of the story.
Jesser sent the book to several traditional publishers, and it was rejected. One publisher suggested making the stories off color, so they would sell.
He ended up taking his book to Allegra Printing in Brookings, which designed the covers, had outstanding customer service, and superb workmanship.
According to Jesser, writing short stories is very difficult.
You have to get a lot of action and clearly develop your characters in a few short pages, shared Jesser.
Along with Jessers current book of Christmas stories, he is also working on having another book published.
The Passable Cook is a historical fiction novel is set in De Smet in 1947. It is about the vicar of St. Stephens church with a little romance and mystery.
The novel will be printed and available on Amazon.
