Tigers wrestlers third in region

PIERRE The Huron boys wrestling team finished third during the Region 3A Tournament on Saturday.

The Tigers amassed 142 points and qualified six wrestlers for the Class A State Tournament, which begins Thursday in Sioux Falls.

Aberdeen Central claimed the Region 3A title in the 9-team event with 277.5 points, while Pierre was second at 261.5.

Huron was third, followed by Mitchell at 137.5 and Milbank at 120.5.

Moses Gross won an individual title for the Tigers at 150 pounds. He used a pin at the 4:19 mark of the championship match against Joe French of Milbank to improve to 34-1.

Gross will be attempting to reach his fourth state finals after winning in 2021 and 2022 and finishing second in 2023.

Aiden Zavesky at 132, Lah Doh Soe at 138 and Bryan Ramirez at 215 were third for Huron to clinch a spot in the state tournament field.

Also earning a state berth for the Tigers were TJ Lien at 157 and Lucas Chaparro at 165. Both wrestlers finished fourth to advance.

The top four finishers in each weight class qualified for the state tournament.
