BRANDON The Huron Tigers had a third straight game of cool shooting and it led to a 58-43 loss to the Brandon Valley Lynx Thursday night in the final regular season came for the Tigers.
Huron ends the regular season with a record of 7-13 and will be on the road March 1 for a SoDak 16 state tournament play-in game, while Brandon Valley will host a SoDak 16 game, after closing the regular season Saturday when the Lynx host Harrisburg.
We did better late, said Huron coach Kody Kopfmann. We got looks but shots still didnt fall tonight and we got behind. But I thought we battled really hard.”
The Lynx got off to a 4-0 start on buckets from Madison Geiver and Alyvia Padgett, before Hylton Heinz got Huron on the board with a short jumper at the 4:05 mark of a slow first quarter.
Geiver scored again, but Aly Davis countered for the Tigers.
After a three point play for Brandon Valley, Tatum Peterson hit two from the charity strip to cut the margin to three points, 9-6. But the Lynx scored the final five points of the quarter, all by Gracie Salter, to take a 14-6 lead to the quarter break.
The momentum that Brandon Valley built over the final moments of the first quarter carried over to the second period.
Davis scored to open play for the Tigers, but Brandon Valley scored the next nine points to balood the lead to 15 points, at 23-8, before Huron began chipping away.
Hamtyn Heinz hit a teardrop in the lane, which was countered by Padgett. A mini five-point Tiger rally, capped by a Hamtyn Heinz three pointer cut the lead to 10 points. The teams traded baskets over the final minute and a half of the half and Brandon Valley took a 29-20 lead to the locker room.
After closing the gap in the waning moments of the half, the Tigers looked to carve more deeply into the Brandon Valley lead, but the Lynx had other ideas, as Geiver hit a deuce and Evie Hoff hit a trey to push the lead back to 14.
Huron was scoreless until Alison Janes got a bucket in the paint at the 3:14 mark, and a pair of Hamtyn Heinz free throws with less than a minute in the period were the only points that Huron could muster in the third quarter and Brandon Valley controlled it largest lead, 42-24, headed to the fourth quarter.
In the end, it was too large a deficit to overcome. A 6-0 run by the Tigers over a minute and a half period of play cut the margin to 11 points and Huron could have cut it to single digits, but misfired on the opportunity, and Brandon Valley responded with a 5-0 run that pushed the lead back to 16 points.
Another rally, with buckets from Kenzie Siemonsma, Tatum Peterson and Hamtyn Heinz cut the lead to 12 points, but that was as close as it got for the Tigers as time ran out.
Salter led the Lynx, scoring 15 points off the bench and Hoff added 14 counters.
Hamtyn Heinz was the lone double figure scorer for the Tigers, as she netted 16 points in the game.
I some good things tonight, Kopfmann said. We got some good movement on offense and got really good looks. Now we just need to get those shots to go in. Defensively we played well and our defense keeps us in games against anyone.
Hurons SoDak 16 opponent will be set over the weekend, after the rest of the Class AA teams wrap up their regular season. Class AA girls SoDak 16 games, with a ticket to the Class AA state tournament at stake, are set for March 1.
