Hearing examiner recommends approval of conditional use permit for beef plant

HURON Hearing examiner Ron Gogolin, city planner Barry Cranston, and city inspector Chris Newman heard three items at the hearing examiners meeting on Wednesday at noon at City Hall.

The first, a variance request filed by Gary Marshall at 407 6th St. NE, was later withdrawn after the meeting.

The next two were both conditional use permits. First, Buell Consulting, Inc., representing Verizon Wireless, presented a proposal to construct a cell tower at 360 Jersey Ave. NE. The permit was required due to a public utility structure being placed in an area zoned multiple family residential district. The hearing examiner recommended approval with conditions.

The final item on the agenda was a conditional use permit to construct a beef processing plant on lots 1 and 2 of the Vantage Business Park Addition. Representatives from High Plains Premium Beef were present to explain their proposal, which was very similar to the proposal presented to the hearing examiner in February, but in a different location.

Multiple residents asked questions and spoke against the proposal. Gogolin recommended approval, but with conditions.

The two conditional use permit items will be part of Monday evenings 5:30 p.m. Huron City Commission meeting at City Hall.
