Local realtors attend meetings in Washington

More than 8,000 realtors were in Washington, D.C., recently, to attend a weeks worth of legislative meetings and to meet with senators and representatives.

Among those attending were Laurie Smith and Angie Uttecht from Huron.

Uttecht serves as Rep. Dusty Johnsons Federal Political Coordinator for the S.D. REALTORS Association, and updated Johnson on the real estate market nationally and in South Dakota.

The South Dakota delegation also meet with Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds during their time in the Capitol.
Legislative meetings on advocationg for housing affordability, private property rights and accessibility to professioal representation to help people reach home ownership.

Information was shared with the Capitol delegation.

Housing affordability is low due to increasing home values, higher interest rates and a lack of inventory.

The states residential house has increased 48.6% since pre-pandemic, with Huron homes increasing 20% in the last year, pushing the average home price past $200,000 for the first time.

The average age of a first-time home buyer is 36.

The NAR is also advocating for veterans to pay for professional representation, if compensation does not come from the seller.
