BROOKINGS Behind a solid opening round by Blake Larson, Wessington Springs led by nine strokes after the first 18 holes of play in the Class B State Boys Golf Tournament on Monday at Brookings Country Club.
The top three golfers for the Spartans turned in a score of 237, while Hamlin and Hanson shared the second spot with scores of 246.
Chester was fourth at 247, followed by Clark/Willow Lake at 248.
De Smet and Miller finished the opening day in a three-way tied for the ninth spot in the 23-team event, with scores of 252.
Blake Larson carded a 2-over par 74 for Wessington Springs on Monday to carry a 1-stroke lead into the second round.
Derek Brueggeman of Miller and Gavin Colson of Sully Buttes shared the second spot with scores of 75, while Drake Mueller of Faulkton Area and Taylor Kriech of Colman-Egan each had a score of 76 to share the fourth spot.
Cade Gaikowski of Clark/Willow Lake was tied for eighth after the first 18 holes of play in the 36-hole event with a 79, while Brock Krueger of Wessington Springs shared the 12th spot with five other golfers with an 80.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Spartans was Luke Larson with an 83, which placed him in a tie for spot No. 31.
Max Kees of De Smet and Kaden Wookey of Clark/Willow Lake claimed a share of the 24th spot with scores of 82, while Ethan Bartholow of James Valley Christian and Briggs LaBrie of Doland were also tied for 31st with scores of 83.
Danny Sudenga turned in an 84 for De Smet to share the 39th spot, along with Oliver Fritzsche of Miller.
Tom Aughenbaugh of De Smet shot an 85 to put him in a tie for 54th.
Other area golfers in the tournament were JD Thompson of Wessington Springs with an 89, Ethan Schmiedt of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket with a 91; Jorryn Heilman of Miller with a 93, Kadyn Fast of De Smet with a 96 and Luke Norden of Miller with 106.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be held today, starting at 8 a.m.
