HURON The race for the two District 22 seats in the S.D. House came down to the wire Tuesday night.
In the end, Lana Greenfield of Doland scored a huge win in Spink County polling, enough to overcome a very close third-place finish in Beadle, and earn a return to the S.D. House. Clark County was a virtual dead heat among the candidates
Greenfield totaled 1,091 votes (37%), narrowly defeating former Huron police chief Kevin Van Diepen, who had 922 votes (34%) and Terry Nebelsick (791 votes, 29%)
Greenfield held a 54% to 23% (Nebelsick) to 19% advantage in her home county.
In Beadle County, Van Diepen claimed 738 votes, to Nebelsicks 574 and 532 for Greenfield.
In the race for Beadle County Commissioner for District 2, challenger Jared Zerfoss defeated long-time commissioner Rick Benson, 136 votes (56%) to 105 (44%).
County officials who were unopposed and were automatically elected include Jacque McCaskell, treasurer; Cheri Bjorke, coroner and Doug Ramsell, commissioner.
The only local race in the Nov. 5 general election is that for the District 22 State Senate.
Republican incumbent David Wheeler will face Democratic challenger Jim Schmidt. Both candidates are from Huron.
