HURON There is literally something for everyone this weekend as the S.D. State Fairgrounds hosts is busiest weekend next to the state fair.
Car racing, cooking competitions, live music and acres of shiny vehicles are all on tap, so make plans to head to the fairgrounds.
Thursday
The Wheel Jam Truck Show runs throughout the weekend, with specific events that are highlighted. Registration for the show begins at noon.
The main attraction on Thursday night is the return of stock car racing to Dakota State Fair Speedway. Wild Race Car Night, is sponsored by Dakotaland Federal Credit Union and features your favorite drivers on the dirt-track oval.
Friday
Friday features a plethora of events both on and off the fairgrounds.
Beginning at 5 p.m., registration for the annual Candy Weinreis Memorial Poker Run will begin at the Red Arrow Bar in downtown Huron. The run will commence at 6 p.m. and wrap up at the Earl Nordby 4H Exhibit Hall on the S.D. State Fairgrounds.
At 5:30 p.m., the gates will open for chili connoisseurs to participate in the F.A.T. Friday Chili Challenge Peoples Choice tasting. Chili chefs will create their signature taste throughout the day and offer tastings to the public, with $75 going to the Peoples Choice winner. The chili competition will also have a judged division, with the winner pulling down a cool $250 first prize.
The Wheel Jam Truck Show Friday Night Rockin Lights competition begins at 9 p.m. on West Machinery Road, while at the same time, local band Urbandale Lane will crank up the volume for a live show in the Nordby Exhibit Hall.
Saturday
Saturday is shiny iron and tasty barbeque day.
Registration for the Iverson Auto Classic Car and Motorcycle Show-n-Shine begins on East Machinery, beginning at 9 a.m. and at 10 a.m., the Bass Wars Sound Competition will take place in the Hippodrome.
Trucks will begin to line up for the Wheel Jam Truck Show Dynamic Engine Brake Competition beginning at 11 a.m. and the competition itself begins at 1 p.m., following a memorial to country singer Toby Keith.
Beginning at 2 p.m., the Backhard BBQ Peoples Choice tasting takes place, with $125 going to the first-place winner. The BBQ judging competition will earn the first-place winner $150, a shiny trophy and bragging rights until next year. Some of the top smokers and barbeque creators are expected at this years event. Awards in turkey, pork butt, brisket and lamb are set to be handed out at 4:15 p.m.
Also at 2 p.m. Huron Junior Achievement is hosting a bean bag tournament in Horticulture Park.
At 6 p.m., enjoy Bike Games, on 3rd Street, near Livestock Avenue and following the games, the RoBeau Speed Co. Motorcycle Stunt Show will kick off, sponsored by Keith Cundy.
Stock car racing returns for the second time as Olympic Motors sponsors the Dakota State Fair Speedway Challenge Cup XXI races.
Round two of the Wheel Jam Truck Show Light Show begins at dusk and at 8:30 p.m., the doors open at the Nordby Exhibit Hall for Big Jim Jam Fest, featuring the Ron Keep Band.
Sunday opens with a pancake feed sponsored by Christian Motorcyclists Association, in Horizons Hall (formerly the Womens Building) on the fairgrounds and its rags-down at 11 a.m. for the Wheel Jam Truck Show judged show.
From noon to 4 p.m., there is an Extreme GraphiX Bike Show in the midway Mercantile building (formerly the Family Living Center), while the Backstreet Cruisers Car Show is taking place at the same time.
The day and the weekend wraps up at 4 p.m. with the Wheel Jam Truck Show awards presentation.
