HURON With top-10 finishes in all four Kansas City Barbecue Societys judged meats, Mr. Dudes, of Sioux Falls, was the overall grand champion at the S.D. Barbecue Championships.
Mr, Dudes captured a fourth place in chicken, was third in ribs, garnered a seventh place in pork and third in brisket to earn the $2,500 top prize – and bragging rights – at this years event.
Reserve champion ($2,000) was Eggspert, of Wilmar, Minn., and Burnt Trees of Minot, N.D. earned $700 for third.
In a special smoke turkey competition, La Ta Que of Gillete, Wyo., won first place and Fridays stand-alone ribs competition was won by Fernandos Rib Company of Fargo, N.D.
The Backyard BBQ Peoples Choice winner in four categories – turkey, pork, lamb and beef – went to SamKooshi BBQ of Huron. The top prize in each division was $125.
The Backyard BBQ judged competition saw Meat Militia of Florence claim the top spot in turkey, pork and beef, while Alts Custom Q of Forestburg was judged first in lamb. Top prize in the judged competition was $150 in each division.
On Friday, the F.A.T. Friday Chili Challenge took place, with Peoples Choice and Judged champions crowned.
The team from Montgomery Real Estate earned the Peoples Choice group award, and SamKooShi BBQ was the choice in individual chili.
The chili that won the judges over was made by Moneys in the Meat, the team of Edward Jones.
A total of $16,535 in prize money was handed out over the weekend.
