HURON The Huron Board of Education held its final meeting of the current fiscal year Monday night, taking steps to begin updating policies of the board itself and how it governs, tending to other school district business and adopting its operating budget for the 2024-25 school year.
Superintendent Dr. Kraig Steinhoff presented Kristi Glanzer with a certificate of appreciation for her Three-plus years of diligent work as a board member.
The school districts new fiscal year begins July 1, so Mondays meeting was the last for Glanzer, who chose not to seek re-election. Newly elected board member Ray Cardona will take the oath of office at the next board meeting, set for July 8.
The board began discussion on several policies at the meeting, most of them dealing with Section B, which covers School Board Governance and Operations. School district Business Manager Kelly Christopherson said that Brittany Neuharth in his office had gone through the lengthy section and provided recommended updates to the policies, some of which had not been changed since 2012.
Likewise, the board began a policy change on the districts criminal background check, to align with policy recently presented by the Associated School Boards of South Dakota.
The final policy receiving its first informational look at Mondays meeting regards the use of computers and networks in the district. Dr. Steinhoff said that it is the school districts responsibility to make sure that the computers required for school work are unable to access obscene materials online. He said that the districts technology director utilizes specific software to accomplish the task.
All policies discussed were for informational purposes, and are set for a first reading at the next meeting. All policies are able to be viewed on the school districts website, under the school board heading. Choose board packet to review the current policies and any proposed changes.
With no discussion taking place, the board unanimously approved its $55,494,000 budget for the upcoming school year. The budget includes funding for the addition planned to the high school.
As part of the consent agenda, the board approved a contract for shared services between the Huron School District, and the Hitchcock-Tulare, Sanborn Central and Wolsey-Wessington School Districts, for shared use of CTE classes and equipment.
In other action, the board:
Approved three new hires and one resignation in the district.
Heard a thank you from Dr. Steinhoff to the staff, students and community partners for a successful ESL summer school program.
Approved a second reading on updated handbooks for each of the school districts buildings for the upcoming school year.
Heard a report from Dr. Steinhoff regarding bullying prevention data collected over the past year.
Approved the recommendation of the districts Activity Director to cast a ballot for Mark Naugle, of the Custer School District, to be the South Dakota High School Activities Associations West River at-large board member.
The board held a school board goal setting session prior to adjourning.
