WESSINGTON Rocking Z Acres, the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society (NPSAS) Steward of the Year Award, is the proud host of a field day on Wednesday, August 7, in Wessington.
This farm grows organic and conventional crops under the leadership of BJ McNeil and Jonnie Zvonek. They are a beacon of innovation and sustainable agricultural practices. Leading the tour, attendees can expect to gain practical knowledge on what’s worked, lessons learned, and ideas for success moving forward, empowering them to implement these practices in their own farms.
McNeil will give tips on how innovation and biology are part of Rocking Z Acres’ core beliefs. Also speaking at the event will be Jerry Matzner, a farmer at Century Farm Organics and Ken Jenkins an organic advisor, Peak Ag Solutions.
In 2018, Rocking Z began its organic adventure. The innovations and research over the last 15 years enabled Rocking Z Acres to evolve. With continued trial and error, the science and research of the weed control battle continues. The farm operation considers soil health first and foremost when making production decisions.
Rocking Z Acres currently grows organic corn, soybeans, winter wheat, buckwheat, sorghum, sunflowers, pinto beans, hemp, and alfalfa. It also conventionally grows corn, soybeans, and winter wheat.
Space is limited and a free lunch will be provided for those who register before Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 9 a.m. by going to the NPSAS website and registering on the event website page: www.npsas.org/a3zp
