‘Painting on the Prairie’ 2024 in De Smet

DE SMET The Harvey Dunn Society is presenting its 16th annual Painting on the Prairie, event.

The Plein Air painting event will run from Aug 8 through 10, in De Smet, with Aug. 11 set aside for an artist wet sale at the De Smet Event Center.

The Dunn Society, started in 2007, presents one of the longest running Plein Air events in the state.

Harvey Dunn was a world-known local artist and teacher, much of whose art depicted the pioneer prairies.

Born on a farm near Manchester, Dunn studied art at South Dakota State Agricultural College in Brookings. One of his more famous paintings is the Prairie is My Garden.

He was an artist during WWI in Europe with the American Expeditionary Force, recording the acts of war in art form.

An Evening with Harvey Dunn, is also being presented, with a Readers Theater Performance and a review of Harvey Dunns artistic work.

An expert of Harvey Dunn will walk through his life and artist workson Friday, Aug. 9, at the De Smet Event Center.

Registration is free for all artists. The three-day event includes adult workshops with live models on Saturday, group workshops on location at Lake Osceola or at The Garden of Remembrance at De Smet Cemetery on Thursday evening, and an all-new Quick Draw event in downtown De Smet on Friday morning.

The childrens workshop on Saturday will feature artist/teacher Karen Kinder of Brookings.

There will be a meet-and-greet on Friday evening at the Laura Ingalls Memorial Society headquarters, with an artist reception at the Ingalls Homestead on Saturday.

Sundays wet sale is open to the public on at the De Smet Event Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
