Duxbury recognized as HRMC Innovator of the Quarter

HURON Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) recently selected Mikayla Duxbury, LPN, to receive its Innovator of the Quarter Award.

Duxbury, currently an LPN on the medical floor, has worked at HRMC over four years. She submitted an innovative idea to create labels for IV tubing, which included organizing the labels in each patient room in a convenient place for easy access to nursing staff, to avoid wasting the IV tubing.

Duxbury, who completed nursing school in the last year while working at HRMC, suggested the idea to improve processes for nurses and avoid wasting supplies, resulting in unnecessary costs to patients.

When I transitioned into the nurse role & was learning new policies related to nursing, I noticed that one of the policies was that the IV tubing is only good for 24 hours (if not continuous) and when I would start my shift, tubing was never labeled so I had no way of knowing how old the tubing was, causing me to always grab new tubing, said Duxbury.

She continued, Since Ive only been a nurse for a short time, Im thrilled to have won an award that will hopefully help our patients in multiple ways.

Each quarter, the Innovator Award is presented and celebrated, indicating eligibility for an annual Innovator of the Year Award.

Ideas are submitted by employees via online form or paper suggestion card and are selected by a committee of peers based upon impact to patient and employee experience, feasibility, and innovation.

The Innovator Award celebrates the power of innovation in solving practical problems and enhancing the quality of care delivered at HRMC.

Duxbury started at HRMC Physicians Clinic as a receptionist and became a certified nursing assistant when starting nursing school. She has now earned her licensed practical nursing degree and is pursuing a registered nurse degree.

She lives in Huron with her husband Austin and has three children, Jackson, Noah, and Jonas.

Outside of work, she likes to be outside with her children, read or do puzzles.
