Letter – Fisk 8-3-24

To the Editor:

Senator David Wheeler, who represents Spink County, Beadle County, and part of Clark County in the South Dakota Senate, was instrumental in passing SB-201, which that takes away local control by the County Commissions.

Jim Schmidt of Huron is running against Senator Wheeler in November. He stands for property rights, is against eminent domain, and is a Vietnam veteran.

People of S.D., we need to vote NO in November on Referred Amendment 21. This will give back local government control to counties, municipalities, townships, etc.

On July 24, Summit Carbon Solutions surveyors were observed surveying within mile of Mellette. Spink County has an Ordinance of 2,500-foot setback. They are definitely not following the local ordinance. It has also been reported that they are surveying Beadle County.

Summit claims the CO2 will be sequestered in N.D. They also have said part of it could be used for fracking oil. It does not matter which party has the next President: the economy needs the oil from the N.D. oil fields. This is why Summit is pushing so hard to build this pipeline. With contents at 2183 pounds/square in, at 80 to 120 degrees, four feet in the groundit creates a dangerous situation to be that close to peoples homes.

This company has no concern for property rights, the environment, or individual concerns. All they are concerned about is how many dollars they can take from the federal government to line their pockets.

We need to stop this abuse of power and let our local governments make decisions about local issues. Money should not be a decisive factor.
