Van Marel returns to HRMC

HURON Doug Van Marel, MD, re-joined the Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) medical staff Aug. 1, according to Erick Larson, president and CEO for HRMC.

Dr. Van Marel has joined our hospital care team as a trusted physician who previously provided excellent care in our community and returns with a great appreciation for the values and heart of the people in Huron and the surrounding communities, says Larson. He brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to ensure patients receive advanced inpatient and emergency care right here in their hometown.

As an internal medicine physician, Dr. Van Marel is specially trained to assess, diagnose and treat complex chronic and acute conditions in adult patients. Dr. Van Marel will care for individuals when they are admitted to the hospital and when they require advanced care in the emergency room.

After graduating with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of South Dakota (USD) Sanford School of Medicine in Vermillion, Dr. Van Marel completed his residency at Michigan State University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Prior to joining HRMC, Dr. Van Marel previously worked at Three Rivers Health and Sturgis Health in Michigan.

Dr. Van Marel believes in the importance of keeping advanced care available locally and is looking forward to ensuring individuals in the Huron area have local access to excellent inpatient care. In rural medicine, its extremely important to be able to provide complex care locally for our community, says Dr. Van Marel. I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Bob [Hohm] as a mentor when I was a young physician and he helped shape the way I care for my patients.

Happy to be back in South Dakota, Dr. Van Marel looks forward to hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time outdoors. He enjoys exploring and collecting new hobbies as a lifelong learner. Dr. Van Marel lives in Huron with his wife, Esther, a who is registered nurse in the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation and same day surgery departments at HRMC. Together they have four daughters, Sarah, who is in the process of applying for veterinary school at Michigan State University; Abigail, who is working toward her certified registered nurse anesthetist degree at Western Michigan University; Rebekah, who is attending USD in Vermillion in preparation to apply to the USD Physical Therapy Program; and Rachel, who is beginning her secondary education at USD for accounting.
