To the Editor:

Is Trump mentally fit to serve four years in the worlds toughest job?

South Dakota rural people are predominantly Republicans who now appear to be devoted to Donald Trump. This is difficult to understand since, in my travels and work relationships, I have observed South Dakota people to be thoughtful and educated.

In contrast, Trumps MAGA rallies are quite horrifying. Unlike the current MAGA version, the past Republican Party had given the nation honest moral leadership. So why the switch to Trumps MAGA?

I personally believe government policies should focus on peoples education, health, and protection laws. Educated and mentally strong officials normally get elected to deal with the above three areas along with tax fairness. For much of Americas existence, the Democrat Party was heavily conservative, preferring to maintain white America. In mid-twentieth century, after a 1954 SCOTUS ruling that ended segregation in public schools, a switch-er-roo took place whereby Republicans became Democrats and vice-versa. That reversal was supported by Civil Rights pressures, legislation, and revised attitudes in all branches of government.

Eight years ago, Donald Trump introduced the new MAGA political party. Unlike with other campaigns, Donald Trump introduced a rhetorical style that incorporates a steady stream of gibberish. He spews out confusion and hate towards a variety of targets. The take-away from Trump rallies is that we should believe him, that as president he would do what he says albeit to any target of his choosing.

Scary stuff. Michael Tomaske recently wrote in the New Republic magazine that Trumps fear of defeat by Kamala Harris has him barking out hatred and bile like a mad dog.

Other writers are asking whether Trump is mentally fit to serve four years in the worlds toughest job. That is a reasonable question. After all, he is 78 years old.
