School Board hears reports

HURON Laura Eagle Star, a senior at Huron High School, gave a brief address to the Huron School Board Tuesday night about their recent play, The Disappearance of the Three Little Pigs.

The play, which was also presented to elementary and middle school students, was well attended by the community, she said. We had a good night, all the actors did really good, Eagle Star told the board.

Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff extended congratulations to Amy Velthoff, a teacher at HHS, for being inducted in the University of South Dakota Hall of Fame was a member of the 2008 Womens Track & Field Team.

He also commended the State A Girls Tennis team for capturing fifth place overall, naming individual team members who placed in the competition. They were freshman Idella Meier, who placed third in singles; freshmen Madeline Kleinsasser and Idella Meier, placing third in doubles; sophomores Say Glay, placing fourth in singles, and Slay and senior Paw Kler Moo, placing fourth in doubles. Also recognized were seniors Paw Kler Moo, fifth place singles; Ann Hoek, fourth place singles; AnneClaire Robish, fourth place singles; and Rubish and Hoek, who placed fifth in doubles. Rubish also won the Spirit of Max award, the sixth time in HHS history.

Steinhoff thanked the HHS student council and their advisers, Jen Fuchs and Sarah Rubish for organizing a great homecoming week. He also thanked the community for making homecoming especially the parade a success.

Steinhoff recognized the girls tennis and boys soccer teams for stopping by Buchanan K-1 Center for Friendly Friday to greet students.

He also thanked Jimmy Johns of Huron for donating sub sandwiches for the seventh grade football players.

Business manager Kelly Christopherson gave an update on the CTE construction project. They will be collecting bids until Oct. 17. The construction bids will include a building addition, remodeling projects, partial high school roof replacement and replacement of the middle school roof.

The state count date was held Sept. 27, and the Huron district has an enrollment of 3,088. Christopherson said they had budgeted for a count of 3,010.

Steinhoff read a letter from the Associated School Boards of South Dakota congratulating the Huron School Board for earning the ALL Bronze Level Award, recognizing school boards for their dedicated service in board development and training.

Steinhoff also talked about Initiated Measure 28, a ballot measure to repeal the tax on anything sold for human consumption.

I am on the Executive Board of the South Dakota Superintendent Association, Steinhoff said. The board voted to oppose IM28 unless there is a plan for revenue replacement. There are currently 53 members of the coalition opposing IM28.

A few of those members include the Huron Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, South Dakota Farm Bureau Federation, S.D. Education Association, S.D. Home Builders Association, and the South Dakota Municipal League.

In new business, the Board introduced new policies for dangerous weapons in the school, a policy directed to the use of alcohol, drugs and controlled substances, and the policy for medical cannabis for qualifying students. Each of these policies will have first readings at the Oct. 28 Board meeting.

Board members approved 15 new hires to the district, three resignations and one request for open enrollment.
