Jefferson rolls to victory against Tigers

HURON The second-ranked Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers showed why they have amassed a 13-1 record this season, flexing their muscles and taking a 25-11, 25-17, 25-18 sweep of the Huron Tigers on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Huron Arena.

Well, they are a very good volleyball team, said Huron coach Josh Lien after the match. Somehow, they were a little bigger, a little faster and swung a little bit harder than they did on film. We knew we had an uphill battle and we would have to be perfect tonight and we just werent.

Senior middle hitter got the Cavaliers rolling in the first set, as after Huron had jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, she scored four of the next seven points of the set and putting Jefferson up 7-2.

The Tigers rallied, as Jencie Goergen collected an ace and Addy Knight snuck a kill past the SFJ front line to cut the lead to three points at 8-5.

The teams traded points and possessions through the middle of the first set, before Simmons eighth first set kill put the Cavs up 14-9, touching off a quick 5-0 SFJ run, with three of the points coming off ace serves by senior Peyten Krull. A handful of Tiger hitting errors kept the rally running for the Cavaliers and Simmons 10th kill closed out the 25-11 win.

Between the first and second sets, Huron libero Hylton Heinz was recognized for her 1,000th career dig, which she achieved Tuesday night against S.F. Jefferson. Last week, Heinz tied the school record for digs in a match, with 49 against R.C. Stevens.

The second set followed much of the same script, as Jefferson built on an early lead, until kills by Aurora Dreyer and Aly Davis helped right the Huron ship. But Jefferson kept scoring points in two and thee point clusters and led 19-13 after a kill by Samantha Mangmoradeth. The Cavs outscored Huron from there, however, taking the 25-17 win and a 2-0 set lead.

The Tiger adjustments began to pay off in the third set, as a Mangmoradeth kill and Goergens second ace cut the early Jefferson lead to a single point, at 7-6 and the two teams played back-and-forth and when Knight slipped an ace in front of the Cavalier back row, Huron held a 10-9 lead.

Jefferson ran the next four points, however, complements of Emory Brosnahan and Sienna Sabers, but a Davis kills and a Cavalier error cut the margin to two points. But as happened throughout the evening, the Cavs went on a 5-0 run, led by Simmons and Sabers and suddenly it as 20-13.

Mangmoradeth kept the Tiger hopes alive with a pair of kills down the stretch, but Huron was never able to get closer than five points and the Cavaliers took the 25-18 win.

I thought that once we settled in and saw how fast the game was moving we did a good job, Lien said. We worked hard on defense and made adjustments and the girls responded well. But we left some points on the floor tonight and have some things to clean up before we play Pierre next week.

In the match, Schmidt led all hitters with 16 kills – 10 of them in the opening set. Brosnahan had nine kills and a pair of aces and Sabers contributed eight kills in the match.

Mangmoradeth and Davis each had five kills to pace the Tigers and Davis added an ace. Knight had four kills and an ace, Goergen had two aces and Heinz also had an ace in the match.

Huron is off until Tuesday, when they travel to Pierre to take on the Governors. The teams played Oct. 8 at Huron Arena and Pierre went home with a 3-1 win.

Lower level action saw Jefferson with the JV match, 25-23, 25-20, but Huron got a measure of revenge, pulling out a 25-23, 20-25, 15-13 win in the Sophomore match.
