SANBORN COUNTY A grass fire, approximately four miles south of the junction of Highways 37 and 34 near Woonsocket, was reported Thursday afternoon.
The Woonsocket Fire Department responded and the call quickly went out for assistance, leading to fire departments from Alpena, Wessington Springs, Letcher, Artesian, Mount Vernonr and Hurons Rural responding to the blaze.
An estimated 1,120 acres were consumed, with no injuries, livestock or structures lost.
Sheriff department personnel from Sanborn, Jerald and Miner Counties were on hand, as well as the S.D. Highway Patrol.
A total of 80 people piloted 27 different vehicles, as well as 15 tractors and 15 water tender trailers were involved in fighting the 4-Mile Fire, which was declared contained just before noon on Friday.
