CHAMBERLAIN The Miller Rustlers boys team finished just outside the top three, which means the team did not qualify for the state cross country meet, but senior Pierce Baumberger won the individual title Thursday at the Region 4A cross country meet, held in Chamberlain at the Chamberlain Country Club.
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte won the team title with 35 points, edging out Platte-Geddes, who scored 37. Chamberlain posted 54 points to finish third. Miller scored 59 to finish fourth. The top three teams in each region make the state meet for team competition.
Baumberger ran 18:10 to easily win the boys individual race. Jayden Taken Alive of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte came in second at 18:30, with Walter Graesser of Platte-Geddes finishing in 18:33 to place third.
Isaiah Gortmaker of Miller also qualified for the state meet, finishing 11th with a time of 19:39.
Jaymin VanDerWerff placed 24th for Miller, less than 30 seconds away from qualifying for the state meet.
The Miller girls used three individual state qualifiers to pace the team to a third-place finish and a qualification for state.
Chamberlain ran away with the team title in the girls race, with 21 points. Platte-Geddes and Miller each finished with 53 team points, but Miller finished third on a tiebreaker.
In the individual race, Chamberlains Grace Phillips coasted to a victory in 20:09. Senior Madeline Nye of Miller finished second with a time of 20:41. Abigail Engelland of Mount Vernon/Plankinton came in third at 20:56.
Gabby Werdel (7th, 22:24) and Morah Swarzendruber (18th, 23:39) both qualified for the state meet for Miller.
The state meet will be held Sat., Oct. 26, in Rapid City.
