To the Editor:

South Dakota has a Medical Cannabis Program since it was legalized in 2020. It is easy to obtain the medical card. So, what reasons are there for recreational marijuana, which Initiated Measure 29 would establish, if approved at our Nov. 5 election?

There are really only two: to make money and to get high. The marijuana industry rakes in billions of dollars annually. Yet, that never means a tax windfall for states. As in Colorado, $4.50 is spent on social costs for every $1 raised in taxes.

As for getting high, that would be devastating for our state far beyond the effect in users. In Colorado, traffic deaths with drivers positive for marijuana increased 138% with legalization. Just think of such users on our 80 mph interstates, where you and your loved ones are traveling.

The potency of this dangerous drug has been developed to be far stronger than the 1970s weed. Concentrated forms in vapes, edibles, candies, cookies, ice creams, and other products reach up to 99% THC, the psychoactive drug. With those products, accidental poisoning occurs with children, teens, and pets. As reported, teen suicides associated with it more than doubled. Workplace accidents, addiction, even psychosis increased.

Black markets, cartel involvement, and human trafficking all increase with recreational. Check the facts on government reports, such as: www.rmhidta.org/publications and https://www.samhsa.gov/, National Library of Medicine, and also on Smart Approaches to Marijuana. Then, please vote No on reckless IM 29.
