HURON A handful of area runners, including three from James Valley Christian, could challenge for top spots in the girls race at the Class B State Cross Country Meet today at Hart Ranch in Rapid City.
The Class B girls race will kickoff the day with a noon MTstart, while the Class B boys race slated for 1:30 p.m. MT.
Entering the season-ending events with high seeds for JVC are sophomore Hadasah Olson (No. 6, 19:37.03); junior Daril Frandsen (No. 11, 19:58.95); and junior Andee Frandsen (No. 25, 20:43.27).
Other area runners holding top seeds are junior Autumn Fallis of Highmore-Harrold (No. 10, 19:51.32) and junior Kendal Uttecht of Wolsey-Wessington (No. 16, 20:10.53).
Fallis, Olson and Uttecht, all earned all-state honors by finishing in the top 25 a year ago.
Junior Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern is the top seed for this years event, with a time of 17:43.33. She ran second to Emery Larson of Chester a year ago, but Larson has since moved to Pierre and will compete in the Class AA race this year.
Also competing in this years event for James Valley Christian at junior Micaiah Brantner (21:57.22) and sophomore Rylin Wipf (24:09.19).
Fallis will be joined at the state meet by Highmore-Harrold teammate Jaylynn Knox, who is a sophomore with a time of 22:23.70.
Other area runners qualified for the Class B girls race are sophomore Alexis Roesler of Wessington Springs (20:57.87); freshman Lainey Goertz of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (21:52.78; sophomore Adalyn Gross of De Smet (21:54.53); seventh-grader Mya Flemming of Wolsey-Wessington (22:28.98); junior Daraby Boersma of Sunshine Bible Academy (22:44.78); seventh-grader Cambria Gross of De Smet (23:10.85); and seventh-grader Alaina Albrecht of De Smet (23:17.72).
Potter County is the defending Class B girls champion.
Boys
A pair of area boys are seeded inside the top 25 for the Class B boys race and will be looking to earn all-state honors.
James Valley Christian junior Dax Frandsen is the highest seeded area runner at No. 14 with a time of 17:01.00, while freshman Brooks McPeak of Highmore-Harrold is seeded No. 20 at 17:19.06.
Senior Finley McConniel of Freeman Academy/Marion is the top-seeded runner in the Class B boys field at 16:00.07, while defending Class B champion Silas Holdeman, a freshman from Mitchell Christian, is the second seed at 16:04.03.
Also reaching the state meet for James Valley Christian are freshman Kaden Ober (17:31.08), who narrowly missed earning all-state honors last season; senior Tayne Herrmann (18:15.03); freshman Giddeon Waldner (18:21.65); and eighth-grader Levi Crandall (18:22.54).
Joining McPeak at the state meet for Highmore-Harrold will be junior Jordan Erfman (18:13.85); senior Aidan Ferens (18:52.08); freshman Carter Webb (18:56.27); and junior Jonah Webb (19:58.09).
Other area runners competing at this years event are senior Jimmy Burma of Sunshine Bible Academy (18:13.54); seventh-grader Jackson Wolter of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (18:20.89); sophomore Jacksen Carter of Wolsey-Wessington (18:21.64); eighth-grader Reagan Sandness of Sunshine Bible Academy (18:29.60); sophomore Jordan Botkin of De Smet (19:04.19); and senior Ranick Fjerstad of Wessington Springs (19:20.58).
Philip is the defending Class B boys champion.
