HHS German III and IV
This year, the German III and IV classes have been combined. Having both levels together has created a positive and collaborative learning environment. Despite the sizable class of 31 students, these juniors and seniors have worked exceptionally well together and it has been a really nice experience! They work hard, but also have fun in the process!
They started the year off with some review games and activities, including the Teller auf dem Kopf activity (as seen in the picture above). The teacher described a scene, all in German, and the students had to listen and draw what they heard. With an added touch of course they had to draw it on a plate on the top of their head! Needless to say, the pictures didnt turn out that great, but the smiles and laughter were priceless!
The class will soon be reading some German short stories and poetry and will end the year reading, discussing, and re-enacting some of the Grimms Fairy Tales.
In addition to classroom activities, the German students will once again be selling German Advent Calendars throughout November. These calendars, filled with surprise chocolate shapes, are a wonderful way to count down the days until Christmas, while also sharing German traditions and culture.
The funds raised go toward enhancing classroom resources and providing scholarships. If you are interested in purchasing them, please contact [email protected].

For math, the fourth and fifth grade are working hard learning how to do multi-digit multiplication and will soon be starting division; the sixth and seventh grade are working on long division and the eighth grade is working on their problem-solving skills in regard to fractions and decimals.
In the content area of social studies, the Riverside Colony students are finishing up their Native American research projects and in science, they are working on understanding how light and sound travels in waves.
Finally, reading and grammar has them working to understand base words and affixes, as well as the four different types of sentences.
