HHS debaters place in Mitchell tournament

HURON The Huron Speech & Debate Team traveled to the 32ndannual Mitchell McGovern Tournament on Nov. 8-9.The tournament is named in honor of Former South Dakota Senator George McGovern.

We are a young team, having graduated a lot of quality seniors last year, said head coach Mitch Gaffer. But we have some good returning team members to build on.The coaches see good things as these new competitors develop as the season progresses.

Top finishers from Huron were:
In Student Congress, Lily Halter placed fourth.
In Readers Theater, Lily Halter, Izzy Schafer, Keara Gabriel, Landon Pomerico, Charlie Bragg, and Henry Van Scharre placed fifth.
In Story Telling, Green Ta Bah placed 10thand Mylie Byrd placed 12th(out of 36 in the division)
In Duet Interp, Green Ta Bah and Izzy Schafer placed 12th(out of 26 in the division).
In Dramatic Interp, Emmersyn McGillvrey placed 16th(out of 50 in the division).
The Readers Theater team has made the awards stage at every tournament theyve attended this year, Gaffer said. Its also nice to see some of our other intepers start to move up the standings. This is important as we approach the State Oral Interp Tournament at the beginning of December.

After 40 years of coaching Speech & Debate in Huron, Ive decided this will be my last year, he added. Im looking to enjoy every tournament weekend with these students as I look to my impending retirement.I cant help but reflect on the hundreds of students Ive taught and taken out to compete around South Dakota, and the nation.I thank the community of Huron for allowing me the privilege of coaching their young people.

The next tournament for the HHS Speech & Debate Team is the Sioux Falls Washington Warrior Invitational on Nov. 15-16.
