HMS Sixth Grade
The sixthgraders at Huron Middle School have been getting acclimated with the Huron Middle School schedule and environment. They have been busy in each of their core classes: math, English-language arts, science and social studies.
Math classes have covered The Number System in Units 1 and 2, which is one of the five main clusters in sixthgrade math. Each of these units were an extension of the skills they learned in fifthgrade. As they start Unit 3, the students will be learning new skills about Ratios and Proportional Relationships, which is the second main cluster. The three remaining clusters are Expressions and Equations, Geometry and Statistics and Probability. They will learn about these concepts starting in December and continue with them after the first of the year. The sixthgrade math classes are taught by Chris Rozell, TyAnn Ulmer and Melody Witte-Trowbridge.
In language arts, sixthgraders are working on two types of writing strategies. The first strategy is Step Up to Writing. This strategy helps writers organize explanatory and persuasive essays in a meaningful way. The second strategy is RACES. This strategy is a mnemonic device that helps students write open-ended constructed responses. It helps them answer all parts of the question by citing evidence and fully explaining their answer. They will be using these strategies throughout the rest of the school year. The sixthgrade language arts classes are taught by Lisa Carr, Sonia Malley and Karissa Schroder.
Sixth graders are completing their mechanical energy unit in science, focusing on energy conservation and energy transfers in everyday situations. Students observed potential and kinetic energy in action through interactive lessons with pendulums, ramps, and rubber bands. They learned how energy shifts form but is never lost, aligning with the principle of conservation of energy. Succeeding the unit, students will design a simple machine model to demonstrate how energy transfers and transforms in real-world applications, from stored to active energy. Teachers report the unit sparked curiosity and a deeper understanding of physics fundamentals. The sixth grade science classes are taught by Courtney Clarke, Josh Lien, and Brook Tschetter.
