Quilts of Valor honors nine

HURON The Huron Area Quilt Guild presented nine quilts on Saturday to honor veterans at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.

Bradley Bridges, Pace Clayton, Dale Cundy, Roger Decker, Phillip George, Deb Gilbertson, Laura Iverson, Walter Osterberg and Donald Zavesky each received a quilt made by the Guild and had the opportunity to share memories of their time in service. Michelle Pitman was also marked to be recognized, but she was unable to be at Saturdays event.

The gathered honorees, Guild members, and family and friends filled the fellowship room Saturday afternoon. The program began with a welcome, the pledge of allegiance, a folding of the flag, and then the individual recognition of each honoree before a time of fellowship and conversation was held.

Quilts of Valor is a national organization that began in 2003. With chapters across the country, veterans have been honored and recognized throughout the country with a quilt to thank them for their sacrifice. In October, the 400,000th quilt was presented to a veteran honoree.

The Huron Quilt Guild is made of members from Huron and multiple communities around Huron who gather to quilt together and spend hundreds of hours on each individual quilt that they present to veterans.

Honorees this year each shared at least a small bit of their personal story, with the oldest honoree turning 90 years old this month to those who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11. Memories were shared with laughs, with somber seriousness, and even with tears to a room packed with people.

The Guild members provided a selection of cookies and bars for fellowship time after the presentation was complete.
