HHS speech and debate team places in tourney

HURON The Huron Speech & Debate Team traveled to the Sioux Falls Washington Warrior Tournament on Nov. 15-16.

Top finishers from Huron:
In Student Congress, Izabella Schafer placed third and Lily Halter placed fifth.
In Poetry, Lily Halter placed eighth out of 42 in the division.
In Story Telling, Green Ta Bah placed 14th out of 36 in the division.

I am very proud of Lily and Izzy placing in Student Congress, said head coach Mitch Gaffer. Lily has been placing this season but this is Izzys first time on the awards stage. This was made all the more impressive considering they used legislation for debate that was different than has been used at previous tournaments. After finding this out, I was able to track down on copy of the bills for them and they researched and wrote speeches during their session. Despite these adversities, they were still able to take awards. Amazing.”

It was also nice to see Lily and Green place high in their respective divisions, Gaffer said. With the State Oral Interp Tournament approaching after Thanksgiving, it shows theyre making good progress. This was the first weekend our Readers Theater team did not place but we have in the past and believe they can make the stage again.”

Were making progress in LD Debate but we havent been able to break through in placing yet, he added. We learned a lot at this tournament that we will be working on this week before Aberdeen.

The next tournament for the team is the Aberdeen Golden Eagle Cup Tournament this weekend on Nov. 22-23.
