Miller wins consolation championship in Class A

SIOUX FALLS The Dell Rapids Lady Quarriers capped a 32-3 season Saturday night, with a dominant 3-1 win over the Dakota Valley Panthers in the championship game of the Class A State volleyball tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIERE Center.

The third-seeded Lady Qs posted set scores of 25-21, 25-23, 16-25 and 25-11 to down Dakota Valley to claim the schools first ever state volleyball title. The best previous finish for Dell Rapids was the teams third-place finish last year.

The Lady Quarriers looked poised to post their third straight sweep in the state tournament, after winning the first two sets. Dakota Valley managed to hang around and make the final score close, but Dell Rapids controlled both sets.

The third set found better luck residing on the Panthers side of the court, however, as suddenly the kill attempts that were wide in the first two sets were finding the line for Dakota Valley, while Dell Rapids was finding it difficult to adjust to a defensive alignment change, as the Panthers took the set win.

But Dell Rapids came out re-focused in set four, racing to an early lead, building it to double digits and snuffing out any chance of a rally by Dakota Valley.

Madelynn Henry led the Lady Quarriers to the win with 24 kills, as she attacked from the center of the back row and from front row positions with equal success. Lauryn Kloth added seven kills, while Sophi Randall controlled the offense with 40 set assists and had 11 digs.

Alaina Wolff had three aces and led the defense with 19 digs while Karlie Ingalls contributed 13 digs.

For Dakota Valley, which ended the season with a record of 31-6, Clair Munch matched Henry with 24 kills. Coryn Kimbell had four aces, as did Madelyn Munch, who also had 34 set assists. Kimbell had 15 digs and Samantha Kimbell added 12.

Sioux Falls Christian 3, Hamlin 0
The battle of the Chargers for third place at the Class A State volleyball tournament went to Sioux Falls Christian. The SFC Chargers, seeded No. 8 and thwarted in their attempt to win the schools eighth straight state title, took it out of the second-seeded Hamlin Chargers, winning the third-place matchup convincingly in straight sets, 25-10, 25-17 and 25-21.

Brietta Tims had her third straight double-digits kills match with 11 in the game, while Camdyn Mulder added 10 and Rachel Dieleman chipped in nine kills. Addisen Barber had 35 set assists and four different SFC players had two aces each. Defensively, Chloe Bosma had 23 digs and Tims added 14.

Hamlin was led by Addison Neuendorfs 12 kills, while Issie Steffensen had 22 assists and 10 digs in the match. Addie Steffensen led the Hamlin defense with 12 digs and Neuendorg claimed 11.

Miller 3, Sioux Valley 0
The Miller Rustlers, seeded No. 1 at this years Class A State volleyball tournament, salvaged a consolation championship fifth-place finish on Saturday, with a sweep of the Sioux Valley Cossacks.

Miller, which ends the season with a record of 30-2, had scores of 25-16, 33-31 and 25-12 in the match.

Paige Werdel had 13 kills, Aleah Schlechter claimed 10 and Kate Lichty contributed eight in the dominant Rustler win. Olivia Resel had 37 set assists and led the defense with 20 digs, while both Schlechter and Gracen Werdel had three ace serves.

Kaedyn Sapp and Adison Renkly each had eight kills for Sioux Valley, which ends the season with a record of 25-8. Sapp also had 23 digs and Sunny Hesby totaled 12 set assists in the match.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 3, Winner 0
The Mount Vernon/Plankinton Titans swept the Winner Warriors in straight sets Saturday, to claim seventh place in the Class A State volleyball tournament.

The Titans won the opening set in both their previous two matches at this years tournament, but then lost three straight to both Dakota Valley and Miller. But on Saturday, MV/P won the opening set 25-21, survived the second set 26-24 and put the match away with a 25-21 win in the clincher.

Reagan Rus again led the Titans, who finish with a mark of 28-7, with 18 kills and contributed 20 digs in the match. Madalynn Lorang had 10 kills and 12 digs, while Alyssa Johnson handed out 32 set assists and had 16 digs. Alexis Hauge led the Titan defense with 25 digs.

The Warriors, who finish 26-9, got 11 kills and 19 digs from Keelie Kuil and seven kills from Lilly Barfus. Gracie Root had 27 set assists and led the defense with 20 digs. Cora Moss also had 18 digs in the match for Winner.
