Hope House receives city letter of support

HURON Gayle Stahl made a presentation to the Huron City Commission during their regular Monday meeting about Hope House. After her presentation, the commission unanimously voted to sign off on a letter of support for Hope House to access opioid settlement grant funding.

Stahl explained the background of Hope House as an extended-stay drug and alcohol recovery home, with residents spending nine to twelve months in the house as they meet with counselors, work through legal matters, and get their lives back on track before moving out of the home and into an independent life. Currently, the Hope House in Huron works with females only, but Stahl reported that she and her board would like to expand to open a mens facility in town as well.

To do that, Hope House will need funding beyond the generous support it has received to this point, and recent opioid settlement funds could offer that additional support. Commissioners clarified that Hope House applying for funding through those funds will not affect any funding that the Huron Police Department would be applying for through the same settlement monies.

The commission approved a pay request for Micro-Comm for the SD Phase 3 Water System and Radio Tower project in the amount of $77,235.22. Water and sewer superintendent Rob Rieger stated that the project is 90-95% complete.

Commissioners also approved a construction change order from Midland Contracting Inc. for the Fourth St. reconstruction project for an increase of $20,172.12 due to buried rubble that was encountered during the project.

The Public Safety Committee presented a request to add 18th St. NW to the snow emergency route, curving along Ohio Ave. to 15th St. NW due to the new senior living facility in the area. This was approved.

Commissioners also:
– Approved a special event on-sale alcoholic beverage license for ThunderBird for a Christmas Party on Dec. 6 at the Center For Independence building at 561 21st St SE.
– Acknowledged the military leave of absence for police officer Stephani Viatohi. Mayor Mark Robish expressed his sincere appreciation for the service of Officer Viatohi to her country.

Mayor Robish announced that city offices will be closed on Thur., Nov. 28 and Fri., Nov. 29 in observance of Thanksgiving. Thursday and Fridays garbage and recycling collection will be picked up on Wednesday and the solid waste rubble site will be closed Thursday through Saturday.

The commission closed with a work session regarding heating issues in the public works building. With the cold weather reaching below-zero temperatures potentially this weekend, the commission chose to make an emergency expenditure to fix the boiler situation. A formal request will be reviewed at the next commission meeting.
