HURON Katelyn Schroeder of Hitchcock-Tulare capped her high school career by being named to the first team of the Class B All-State volleyball team, which was announced Monday by the South Dakota Volleyball Coaches Association.
Schroeder, an outside hitter, was one of four area players to receive the year-end honor.
Katelyn is the smartest player I have coached, as she can see the floor so well and hit a variety of shots, Hitchcock-Tulare coach Jordan Opp said. She has cemented herself in the Hitchcock-Tulare volleyball record books.
Schroeder helped the Lady Patriots to a fourth-place finish in the Class B State Volleyball Tournament this season during her senior campaign.
Katelyn was a six-rotation player for our team this season. We looked at her for her leadership on the floor, Opp said. She really played at a high level all season long, which is evident by her stats. She can take over a match in a hurry.
Schroeder finished with a team-high 485 kills this season for Hitchcock-Tulare. She ended the season with 46 aces on 334 of 356 serving, while having 21 assists and 394 digs.
Sophomore setter Lila Johnson received honorable mention for Hitchcock-Tulare.
Lila was so versatile all year long, Opp said. Not only did she do a good job of running our offense and getting the ball to the variety of our hitters, but she also did a great job hitting out of the right-side spot.
Johnson had a team-high 581 assists this season. She also recorded 122 kills and had a team-high 80 ace serves.
Defensively, Johnson ranked third on the team with 225 digs.
Overall, she is just a great competitor on the floor, Opp added of Johnson. It will be fun to see her improve more the next couple of years!
