The Huron Public Library is pleased to announce the donation of 500 postcards from the collection of Mark Peterson in memory of Marilyn Peterson.
The postcards feature a variety of Huron locations and events such as college football games, the college campus, State Fair, downtown businesses, schools, parades, and pheasant hunting.
Many images were taken before 1950, providing a wonderful glimpse of Hurons early history.
Mark Peterson, a former Huron resident, acquired his interest in collecting postcards from his mother Marilyn. These images are part of his large collection and reflect his interest in history and the familys connection to Huron and the college.
Reference Librarian, Jennifer Littlefield, was pleased to have been contacted by Mr. Peterson. She said, This postcard collection contained many images we did not see while researching the Huron: Images of America book. The library is excited to have the collection.
Long-time Huron residents may remember the Peterson family. Gil Peterson was head football coach and Director of Athletics at Huron College for 10 years. His wife, Marilyn, was the college librarys assistant director and an avid antique collector. They moved to Macomb, Illinois in 1970.
The postcards will eventually be scanned and uploaded to the librarys digital archives which can be found at https://hplsd-montage.auto-graphics.com . For now, visitors are welcome to browse the collection in the South Dakota Room at the library.
