Annual Day of the Tiger fundraiser discussed at Huron School Board

HURON Marianne Trandall, director of the Huron School District Foundation, talked about the upcoming second annual Day of the Tiger fundraiser during Monday nights School Board meeting.

The Day of the Tiger is planned from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, culminating at the Huron Tiger double header that evening. Donations will be matched hourly by individuals and local businesses.

We expect it to garner a good amount of money, Trandall said. Last year we had $25,000 matching funds coming in and we made $50,000 for the event. This year I think we will do pretty well.
Trandall said the goal is to collect about $1 million for the foundation, allowing them to use the interest on that amount to provide scholarship funds.

This year we will focus on giving $12,000 to $14,000 in individual scholarships, she said. Once we get up to a million dollars well be able to give $45,000 a year in scholarships.

Sophomore Isabella Schafer talked to the board about the recent Oral Interp Festival, where the HHS speech and debate team earned two superiors.

John Halbkat, buildings and grounds director, presented the Classified Employee of the Month award to Russ Forrest, administrative assistant buildings and grounds.

Congratulations were extended to Jeff Duffy (Voice of the Tigers) for his recent nomination as a finalist for the South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.

Duffy is one of seven finalists.

The HHS National Honor Society was thanked for going to Buchanan K-1 Center for Friendly Friday, and Lorene Sorlien and the Knights of Columbus were recognized for their donations to the Special Olympics team.

Board members gave first reading to a number of administrative policies that will be changed or updated.

The districts calendar committee met on Nov. 19, making recommendations for the 2024-25 year. School will begin on Aug. 20 and end on May 20, unless there are snow days to make up.
In his report to the board, Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff pointed out that they are two weeks away from the holiday break, and wished everyone happy holidays. Christmas break will be Dec. 23 through Jan. 2, with classes resuming on Jan. 3.

The Board went into executive session, and returned to the meeting to report one action taken. The Board unanimously determined that Zachary Kaderabek has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.

There is only one School Board meeting in the month of December.

The next School Board meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13.
