Delphia VanVugt, age 91

HURON Delphia Del D. VanVugt, age 91, of Huron, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Riverview United Methodist Church with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Delphia Del D. Wiedmeier, the daughter of Christoph and Pauline (Stadel) Wiedmeier, was born on Sept. 11, 1933, in Mound City, S.D. She grew up and attended school in the Herried area. She left home at 14 to babysit for her sisters in Fargo, N.D. Del moved back to Herried where she worked various jobs until she met the love of her life.

Del married Norman (Norm) Lester VanVugt on March 28, 1952, in Herried. In 1953, the couple moved to Huron, where Del worked at Spudnuts Bakery until she took time out to raise their family.

After her family had grown, Del began working again, first at Bingo Gas Station and then at Lewis Drug for 17 years until her retirement in 1989.

Del was a long-time member of the Riverview United Methodist Church where she happily volunteered whenever needed. She was also a lifetime member of the Good Sam Club and the VFW Womens Auxiliary. Del and Norm were very active with the Meals on Wheels program in Huron for many years. They were also volunteers for the Backpack Program and the Senior Center as well.
Del enjoyed crafting, and collecting angels, antique hats and stuffed cats. Another one of her favorite pastimes was going shopping for the next great deal. She and Norm also enjoyed traveling to the various Samboree Camping Events with the Beadle Bums Camping Club. After retirement, they would spend their winters in Mission, Texas, where they made lifelong friends from all over the country.

Grateful for having shared Dels life are her two sons, Brad (Dixie) VanVugt of Huron and Monte (Marie) VanVugt of Black Hawk; one daughter, Amy (Jim) Iverson of Huron; five grandchildren, Mattew VanVugt, Michael (Meghan) VanVugt, Jamye (Tyler) Erb, Angel (Jaron) Stiegelmeier and Allanna (Deegan) Seidel; six great-grandchildren, Olive and Finn VanVugt, Brooks Erb, Woodrow Stiegelmeier with a brother on the way, and Toby and Twyla Seidel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norm in 2017; her parents; her brothers and sisters; her brothers- and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
