HURON The Brookings Bobcats ran away with the game in the second quarter and never looked back, earning a 48-27 victory over the Huron Tigers Tuesday at the Huron Arena.
Huron coach Kody Kopfmann said in pregame that the big difference between Brookings and the first two opponents of the season for the Tigers would be the height across the lineup for the Bobcats.
They used that height in a halfcourt 2-3 zone that really stifled the Huron offense.
We didnt handle the pressure well with their 2-3 zone, Kopfmann said. I didnt think our ball movement was good. I didnt think our execution was good.
After multiple empty possessions for both teams, the Huron Tigers got on the board first as Abagail Harrington was fouled on the drive and hit both free throws. The Bobcats immediately answered, as Macy Even made a backdoor cut and Tess Burns found her for the layup.
Sloan McLagan dialed up a three ball and Logan Smidt sliced through the lane to give the Bobcats a 7-2 lead.
Chloe Carr broke the Brookings run on a step-through jumper, but Julia Burns and Tess Burns each worked down low and got a bucket.
Hylton Heinz was finally able to get a bucket after a steal and Carr added a left-handed bucket just before the end of the first quarter, but the Bobcats took a 13-8 lead to the break.
Julia Burns hit a baseline jumper to open the second quarter, and Aly Davis would respond with a three-point shot. Unfortunately, that would be the only points for the Tigers in the quarter.
McLagen would hit another three and get a layup and Smidt was able to get a layup and hit a free throw. When the halftime buzzer rang, the scoreboard read Brookings 28, Huron 11.
Smidt opened up the second half with a 8-0 run of her own, and McLagan added a bucket to make it 38-11 before Heinz hit a three to break a 23-0 run over more than a quarter of game time.
Huron then set up the press, and there was initially success, but the Tigers couldnt convert that success into points on the scoreboard, and soon the Bobcats begin slicing through the Huron press for layups.
A foul shot from Tess Burns was the final scoring of the third, sending the game into the final frame with the visitors up 41-18.
After Julia Burns got a bucket, Huron got a pair of scores to get within 43-22, but that was as close as itd be until the very end, when a Jencie Goergen pair of free throws made it 48-27. The game would end at that score.
The Bobcats move to 2-0 behind 13 points from Smidt and 10 points from McLagan. Julia Burns added nine points.
The Tigers were led by Heinz with nine points, but the story of the game was 24 turnovers by Huron.
Coach Kopfmann explained that his teams hesitancy to shoot the ball cost them Tuesday night.
If youre open and you dont shoot it, weve got to find someone who can shoot it, Kopfmann said. We cant score the basketball if we dont shoot the ball.
Kopfmann concluded, All credit to Brookings tonight, they showed up tonight and were the better team.
Brookings swept lower-level action, winning the junior varsity game 51-31 and the sophomore game by the score of 49-35.
The Tigers will travel to Rapid City over the weekend, playing Rapid City Central on Friday night and Rapid City Stevens Saturday afternoon.
