HMS Social Studies
The seventh-graders at Huron Middle School are studying the 13 Colonies and the American Revolution. They have learned about the cultural and economic differences between the colonies to understand why they developed differently in our nation.

They have also been learning about the causes of the tension between the colonies and the Britishin the years leading up to the war for independence. Some of the projects they have done in the past few weeks have been making a brochure on why the colonists should have come to the colonies, highlighting whysomeone would travel on a treacherous three-month ship ride across the Atlantic. They also participated in a colony simulation where they were tasked with making decisions for their colony while balancing what was suitablefor the colony.

This week, they have been making a podcast on the Boston Tea Party, discussing its causes and impact on the colonies.

Madison 2-3 Center Music
It has been a great year so far in music class at Madison 2-3 Center. We just wrapped up our concerts on Nov. 18. The second grade presented a concert titled The Colors of Music. All the songs were either about colors or included a color in the title. The songs included were Rainbows Rock, Orange and Yellow and Red, Green, Green, Green, The Blues, Black and White, and Cyndi Laupers pop hit True Colors. The students enjoyed preparing and performing these songs.

The third grade presented a musical titled Hats! This is a musical by John Jacobson and John Higgins. The musical consisted of six songs along with dancing, speaking lines, and a handful of singing solos. The students also came sporting their own unique hats. The musical told the story of Hatless Hank and Ima Milliner, who both were in search of the perfect hat for them. We learned at the end of the musical that its not really about the kind of hat you wear, but more about whats underneath. The students did a magnificent job presenting their musical!

Going forward, we will begin our unit on the Nutcracker Suite in December, and we will also learn and review holiday songs!

Fifth grade Orange Pod
The Orange Pod has been busy, busy, busy in the first semester; we can hardly believe the school year is half over! In Math, we have conquered adding, subtracting, comparing, order, multiplying, and dividing decimals. We know how to correctly read and write decimals as well, and we know that these are skills that will come in handy throughout the rest of our school years and into the future. In Language Arts, were always busy practicing our close reading skills, using strategies to strengthen our comprehension, and improving our writing skills by doing fictional and nonfictional writing. During our Social Studies blocks, we have been learning about Native Americans and their unique traditions, the Age of Exploration, and how the early colonists set up the 13 Original Colonies, paving the way for the birth of our great country we live in today. Weve also been learning about a wide variety of topics in both Physical and Life Science.

Were thankful to our Huron Police Department for their willingness to teach D.A.R.E. to our fifthgraders; they learned valuable lessons about how to stay drug-free and use confident communication skills in the face of peer pressure. Many classes have enjoyed Junior Achievement and have learned how we are free to choose our businesses and careers, and how many products we enjoy today are made from resources all overthe world.

Finally, were excitedto present a great Christmas Concert at the Huron Arena to showcase all that we have learned in Music, Band, and Orchestra. We want to wish your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
