HURON The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks got a huge game from Liz Boschee to overcome a spirited Highmore-Harrold Pirates squad on the way to a 64-43 victory in the 281 Conference girls tournament championship game.
Both teams finish the game with 9-2 records.
The Pirates jumped out quickly with a 5-0 run to open the game and kept up the intensity early, closing out the first quarter with a 15-14 lead over the fifth-ranked Blackhawks.
The two teams played even throughout the second quarter but with two minutes remaining, Boschee hit a jumper for the Blackhawks and the Blackhawks got a steal that Alexa Goertz put down for two, and the Blackhawks closed out the first half with an 8-0 run to take a 26-20 lead to half.
The Pirates got the first four points of the second half, but Boschee got going for the Blackhawks, including her 1,000th career point. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket quickly pushed the lead out, reaching 39-28 at one point. The Pirates would make a run to get back into it, but Boschee dropped in 14 in the quarter and her shot to end the quarter sent the two teams to the fourth period with the Blackhawks enjoying their largest lead of the game, 46-34.
The Blackhawks pulled away in the final frame to claim the 281 championship with a 64-43 final tally.
Boschee powered the Blackhawks to the win with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Alexa Goertz scored 12 points and ripped away seven steals. Goertz was selected as the tournament most valuable player.
Jada Baloun was the leading scorer for the Pirates with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Elle Stagg added 10 points.
The Blackhawks will host Hanson at Sanborn Central on Tuesday. The Pirates are back in action on Thursday, hosting Wolsey-Wessington.

Third Place – Wessington Springs 46, Hitchcock-Tulare 45
Mariah Messmer was fouled on a putback attempt with 1.4 seconds left in a tie game, hitting one of two free throws to give the Wessington Springs Lady Spartans a 46-45 win over the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots for third place in the 281 Conference girls tournament Thursday at Huron Arena.
The Lady Spartans jumped out to a 22-13 lead at halftime, but Hitchcock-Tulare came back and actually led by as many as four in the fourth quarter before Springs was able to tie the score and eventually hit the game-winning free throw.
Messmer led the Lady Spartans, now 5-6, with 11 points. Kerstynn Heim had 10 points and Ashlyn Weber and Kenzie Kolousek each added eight points.
Heim had 12 rebounds to lead Wessington Springs.
The Lady Patriots fell to 4-7 despite a game-high 22 points from Katelyn Schroeder. She also had nine rebounds and four steals.
Cambree Hoekman contributed eight points for Hitchcock-Tulare.
Hitchcock-Tulare is on the road Tuesday at Redfield while the Spartans host Andes Central/Dakota Christian.
