Huron teams earn sweep against Watertown

Boys hold on to snap 6-game losing skid against Arrows
HURON The Huron Tigers last defeated the Watertown Arrows on Dec. 17, 2021. The Tigers finally got over that hump Tuesday, defeating Watertown 64-51 at Huron Arena.

With a six-game losing streak to Watertown, Huron looked a hair tentative coming out of the gate.

Gabe Norberg knocked down the first bucket in the game for Watertown after both teams had a couple of empty possessions.

Mitch Olson got a layup in transition for the Arrows and then Jackson McClemans got a bucket on a third chance opportunity, giving Watertown a 7-0 lead quickly.

Colton McNeil, returning after missing multiple games due to an ankle injury, got the first bucket for the Tigers with a floater in the lane. The Tigers then got a steal and Bubba Peterson finished in transition.

Norberg hit his second three of the game on a side-step reset shot. Blake Ellwein answered on the ensuing possession with a three for his first basket of the game.

Peterson would find Ellwein after a steal for a dunk to get the Tigers within one at 10-9, but Spencer Wientjes then took the ball down the lane for a hard-fought basket and a 12-9 Arrow lead.

After a pair of empty possessions, Ellwein nailed another three to knot the score at 12-12. Davis Chase got a putback to give Huron the lead just before the end of the first quarter.

Anderson Porisch opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run of his own with a three and a putback on his own miss. Kolby Hofer then faked a three and hit a long jumper to give Huron a 21-12 lead.

Olson was fouled and hit both shots for the Arrows, and Chase was fouled and missed his third and fourth free throws of the game.

Wientjes was able to cut through Tiger rebounders and get a putback and McClemans hit a short shot to make it 21-18 quickly.

Ellwein got a steal and put in a bucket and was then fouled and hit both free throws to push the Huron lead out to 25-18.

Carter Buisker hit a three for Watertown, but McNeil then got a pair of buckets on a floater and a backdoor pass from Porisch.

After a steal, Peterson nailed a wing three to give Huron a double-digit lead at 32-21.

Wientjes got another putback bucket and McClemans missed his second and third foul shots of the first half.

After a scramble on the floor, Porisch got a bucket to make it 34-23, and that was the tally at half.

The third quarter was when Watertown attempted to make their move, led by McClemans, as he hit a three to open the second half and scored the first seven points of the quarter for Watertown, with Peterson hitting a basket and then getting one of two free throws to keep the lead at 37-30 Huron.

Norberg drove hard to the baseline and bounced in a bucket, then Ellwein got one of two free throws after being fouled on the drive.

Huron went their next possession with four shots and no points, and the Arrows capitalized, with Kaden Decker getting a bucket on a pass by Wientjes to get within four at 38-34.

Ellwein would get one of two free throws and Porisch would follow with the same before Buisker answered with a three ball to bring Watertown within 40-37.

Theyd not get closer the rest of the night.

Chase was able to get a reverse layup and the foul shot fell and Ellwein then got a steal and a dunk, though on the dunk, a technical foul was called for hanging on the rim, which was Ellweins fourth foul.

He would sit as McClemans hit both foul shots. Porish took over the offensive focus for Huron in Ellweins absence, getting a pair of buckets around another three by Norberg, and the Tigers took a 49-42 lead into the final period.

Huron came out with increased defensive intensity in the fourth quarter, getting one of two free throws from Chase and from Porisch to open the quarter before a technical foul was called on Decker. Ellwein sank the technical foul shots to push the lead back out to double digits, 53-42.

Porisch got another free throw and Ellwein followed with a scoop shot. In transition, Ellwein got another dunk to make it 58-42.

McClemans and Ellwein traded one of two free throw shots, and then Coach Tim Buddenhagen began to pull the Huron starters with three minutes left in the game and a 16-point lead.

The very last points of the game were an and one opportunity for Buisker, the only made field goal for Watertown in the final quarter as Huron closed out the 64-51 victory.

The Tigers move to 7-4 behind 23 points from Ellwein. Porisch added 14 while Chase and Peterson each had eight.

Porisch and Ellwein each had six rebounds to pace Huron.

McClemans led Watertown, now 3-8, with 16 points. Norberg bucketed 11 points and Buisker had 10 points off the bench.

McClemans and Olson each grabbed six rebounds for the Arrows.

Buddenhagen was pleased with the final result for the team.

This was an emotional game tonight for the guys for a lot of reasons, Buddenhagen stated. We need to sink more of the free throws so the game wouldnt have been near this close, but credit to the kids for earning the win.

The Huron boys host Yankton Thursday. Buddenhagen says this sort of effort will be needed moving forward, though theres always room for improvement.

We need to continue to be aware on who their main guys are and key in on them. We did a good job of that tonight. That will be key on Thursday, he said. We need a better start. That will help propel us to better results.
