In Lindsey Alves Pre-Algebra classes we are working on topics that are relatable to real world situations, so we have been doing a lot of hands-on activities. One of the activities we did was looking through grocery ads and figuring out the unit rates for different grocery items and then figuring out which was the better buy.
We are also figuring out how to solve proportions. We did an activity figuring out how many packets of sugar are in one bottle of different kinds of drinks. We looked at the different drinks and the students had to set up the proportions and solve per bottle. We then ordered the drinks from least to greatest based on sugar content. Quite a few of the students in the class drink pop and were amazed how much sugar was in each drink!

Our third-grade ESL students have engaged in lessons that explicitly teach vocabulary, grammar, as well as English language form and functions through the Frames for Fluency curriculum. Frames for Fluency is designed to increase oral fluency of English learners through thematic pictures, vocabulary word and picture cards, and sentence frames. The sentence frames provide students with visual supports to make the whole sentence make sense. With services provided daily, students come to our room in small groups of four to 12 students, to work with my para and I, which ensures we are providing appropriate levels of instruction for each student. Groups practice listening, reading, speaking, and writing throughout each language lesson.
Students also join us for small reading groups where they systematically practice decoding skills, fluency, learn spelling patterns, sight words, and read short stories. Regular assessment guides our approach to instruction for these groups.
Thanks to our collaborative team of third grade teachers, our students have made such great gains, and many students will exit the ESL program this year. Our classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and students are amazing!

In January, our Madison second grade ELL students have been hard at work building their skills and preparing for success! In our team-taught classes, they explored compare and contrast strategies, diving into texts and discussions to find connections and differences. We also spent time preparing for the Access test. The students worked on a variety of skills to get them listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Its been a busy and exciting month of learning and growth!
